Required documents for a visa: the universal checklist
The document set almost every visa application asks for — passport, form, photo, itinerary, accommodation, funds, insurance and employment proof.
Nearly every visa application asks for eight items: a passport valid 3–6 months beyond departure, a completed form, a recent biometric photo, round-trip travel bookings, accommodation for every night, proof of funds, travel medical insurance and evidence of ties such as employment or study.
Passport and photo
The passport must be valid beyond your departure date by the margin the destination sets — three months for Schengen, six months for much of Asia — issued within the last ten years, with one or two blank pages. Photos follow the ICAO standard: neutral expression, plain background, no glasses, taken within six months.
Travel and accommodation evidence
Consulates want a coherent story: a round-trip or onward reservation, and hotel bookings or a host's address covering every single night. Gaps in the accommodation chain are queried. Use refundable bookings rather than buying non-refundable tickets before approval.
Financial evidence
Three to six months of official bank statements, stamped or downloaded with a verification code, plus payslips or tax returns. Officers look at the pattern, not the peak — a large deposit landing days before submission reads as a borrowed balance.
Insurance and ties
Travel medical insurance is mandatory for Schengen (€30,000) and increasingly expected elsewhere. Ties evidence — employment letter with salary and approved leave, business registration, property deeds, student enrolment, family responsibilities — is what convinces a caseworker you will return.
Translations and consistency
Documents in other languages usually need certified translations, and some countries require an apostille. Above all, names, dates and addresses must match across every document and the online form; contradictions are treated as unreliability.
Frequently asked questions
What documents are required for a visa?
Passport, application form, biometric photo, travel bookings, accommodation for the whole stay, proof of funds, travel insurance and evidence of ties to your home country.
How many bank statements do I need?
Three to six months in most cases, official and verifiable, showing a stable balance rather than a single late deposit.
Do I need to book flights before applying?
You need a reservation, not a paid ticket. Use a refundable booking so a refusal does not cost you the fare.
