How do I get through airport security faster?
To get through airport security faster: enrol in a trusted-traveller programme (TSA PreCheck, Global Entry or CLEAR), fly before 07:00 or after 20:00, travel carry-on only, keep liquids, laptop and power bank in one outer pocket, wear slip-on shoes with no belt or metal, and check the terminal map for a second, quieter checkpoint.

The 6-step fast lane
- Enrol once, save forever. TSA PreCheck ($78/5yr) covers domestic screening; Global Entry ($120/5yr) includes PreCheck plus expedited US customs — the obvious pick if you fly internationally. CLEAR ($199/yr) replaces the ID check with a biometric kiosk and stacks on top of PreCheck. Outside the US, look for the UK's fast track, Germany's EasySecurity, and the EU registered-traveller schemes.
- Fly the fringes. Before 06:00 or after 20:00 the same checkpoint that queued 30 minutes at 08:30 clears in five.
- Carry-on only. No bag drop, no carousel, and you walk straight from kerb to checkpoint.
- Pack for the tray, not the trip. Liquids bag, laptop, tablet and power bank all go in one outer pocket so a single pull empties the bag. Power banks must be in the cabin — never checked.
- Dress for the scanner. Slip-on shoes, no belt, no metal jewellery, jacket already off, boarding pass on your phone with brightness up.
- Know the terminal. Most big hubs have more than one checkpoint feeding the same airside area; the one by the premium check-in desks or one level up is usually near-empty. Airport apps and live wait-time boards show this in real time.
What to do while you're in the queue
Prep before you reach the belt: shoes loosened, laptop half out, liquids in hand, pockets emptied into your bag rather than a tray. Passengers who prep at the belt add 2–4 minutes each to the line behind them.
The new scanners change the rules
CT (3D) scanners are rolling out across US, UK and EU hubs. Where they're installed, liquids over 100ml and electronics can stay in the bag — some UK airports have raised the liquid limit to 2 litres. Rules differ terminal by terminal, so follow signage and assume the old 100ml rule for your return leg.
International arrivals: the second bottleneck
Security is only half the queue — immigration on arrival is the other. Global Entry, the UK/EU e-gates, Japan's Trusted Traveler Program and Australia's SmartGate all cut passport control to a couple of minutes. Have your onward address and, where required, your entry authorisation (ESTA, ETA, ETIAS) ready before you land.
Connection-day tactics
On tight connections, ask at the gate for a short-connection pass, use the transfer security lane rather than exiting airside, and pick seats near the front. When the connection breaks anyway, the delay may be compensable — see below.

How long does airport security take on average?add
Standard lanes run 15–30 minutes at large hubs, spiking past 45 minutes during the 07:00–10:00 and 16:00–19:00 peaks. TSA PreCheck and CLEAR lanes are typically under 5 minutes, and most European fast-track lanes under 10.
Is TSA PreCheck or Global Entry better?add
Global Entry ($120 / 5 years) includes PreCheck ($78 / 5 years) plus expedited US customs on international arrivals — so if you fly internationally at all, Global Entry is the better value. CLEAR ($199/yr) skips the ID queue, not the screening, and works best stacked with PreCheck.
What time of day has the shortest security lines?add
The first departure wave before 06:00 and the late wave after 20:00. The daily peak is 07:00–10:00, when business banks and long-haul departures overlap. Mid-afternoon (13:00–15:00) is the quietest non-fringe window.
Do I still have to take out liquids and laptops?add
It depends on the scanner. Airports with CT/3D scanners (a growing share of US, UK and EU hubs) let you leave liquids and electronics in the bag. Where the older 2D X-ray is still in use, the 100ml/1-quart rule and separate laptop tray still apply — assume the old rules unless signage says otherwise.
How early should I arrive at the airport?add
Two hours for domestic and short-haul, three for long-haul international. With carry-on only and a trusted-traveller programme you can safely cut that to 75 minutes domestic and two hours international at airports you know.
What slows people down most at security?add
In observed queues: loose liquids buried in a bag, power banks and cables in an outer pocket, belts and boots, full water bottles, and passengers who start unpacking only once they reach the tray. Prepping in the queue rather than at the belt saves 2–4 minutes per person.
