Best Time to Visit Portugal: Region by Region

Sweet spot

May and September — warm but not blistering, sea swimmable, prices 30–40% below August peak.

By region

  • Lisbon / Porto: Apr–Jun, Sep–Oct. Avoid Aug (heat + tourists).
  • Algarve: May–Jun & Sep are perfect; Jul–Aug is packed and 2× the price.
  • Azores: Jun–Sep for whale watching and hiking. Rain possible any month.
  • Madeira: Year-round mild. Feb for the Flower Festival.
  • Douro Valley: Sep–Oct for the wine harvest (vindima).

2026 events

  • Carnival (Feb 14–17): big in Madeira and Loulé.
  • Festa de Santo António (Jun 12–13, Lisbon): sardines and street parties.
  • São João (Jun 23–24, Porto): plastic-hammer mayhem on the streets.
  • NOS Alive (Jul 9–11, Lisbon): festival headliners.

Worst time

Late Jul to mid-Aug: Algarve hotels 2–3×, Lisbon hostels sell out, sea breeze can't compensate for 38°C inland.
