Best Time to Visit Japan: Month-by-Month for 2026
When to visit Japan — cherry blossom dates, autumn leaves, ski season, festivals, weather and crowds month by month.
The two prime windows
- Late March – early April — cherry blossom (sakura). Crowded, book hotels 6 months out.
- Late October – mid November — autumn leaves (koyo). Cheaper than spring, almost as beautiful.
Month-by-month
- Jan–Feb: Best for skiing (Hokkaido, Nagano). Cold but dry.
- Mar: Plum blossoms, then sakura starts in Kyushu.
- Apr: Peak sakura in Tokyo/Kyoto (around April 1–7).
- May: Golden Week (Apr 29–May 5) — avoid; locals travel.
- Jun: Rainy season (tsuyu). Cheap, fewer tourists.
- Jul–Aug: Hot, humid, summer festivals (Gion Matsuri, fireworks).
- Sep: Typhoon risk, especially Okinawa.
- Oct–Nov: Crisp, perfect — peak koyo in Kyoto mid-Nov.
- Dec: Illuminations, low tourist counts, Christmas-market vibe.
Sakura 2026 forecast (preliminary)
- Tokyo: Mar 24
- Kyoto: Mar 28
- Sapporo: May 1
What to avoid
Golden Week, Obon (mid-Aug) and New Year (Dec 28 – Jan 4) — domestic travel spikes prices 2–3×.
